Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Science Bowl Prep on my phone?
Yes! Science Bowl Prep is fully mobile-friendly. You can use it directly in your mobile browser, or add it to your home screen for a clean, fullscreen app-like experience on both iOS and Android.
Where do the questions come from?
All practice questions are official, public-release questions provided by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) from past National Science Bowl® competitions. This app is not affiliated with, sponsored, or endorsed by the DOE.
How is my answer graded?
For short answer questions, your answer is checked against a primary correct answer and a list of known alternate answers. The system is designed to be flexible, but it may not catch every possible valid phrasing. Multiple choice questions are graded based on a direct match with the correct letter option.
What is the Adaptive Test and how does it work?
The Adaptive Test is a 24-question skill assessment that adjusts in real time based on your performance. It covers all categories and gets easier or harder as you go. At the end, it gives you a level (1–5) and shows your strengths and weaknesses by subject.
Can I simulate a buzzer round?
Yes! Use Speech Mode with the timer enabled. The app will read questions aloud, and if you submit an answer before it finishes, it will flag it as an interrupt — just like in live Science Bowl matches.
Can I print tests for offline use?
Yes! Click “Generate Printable Test” to create a PDF with a randomized set of questions from multiple categories, along with an answer key. Great for drills, take-home assignments, or team tryouts.
How can teachers use this app?
Teachers can use Science Bowl Prep to run team practice, assign learning center lessons, give timed assessments with the Adaptive Test, or hand out printed tests. It’s also useful for warm-ups, enrichment, and sub plans.
What’s the difference between Learn, Glossary, and Flashcards?
“Learn” contains full lessons organized by subject and unit. The “Glossary” lets you search and filter science terms. “Flashcards” offer quick recall drills by category, either showing the term first or definition first.
